Hub 5 Firmware Upgrade

Had a Firmware upgrade pushed out this morning at 00:17  Service was resumed about 6 minutes later according to my Router emails.

Now at LG-RDK_7.6.15-2306.5

No idea what the changes are however as I use modem mode.

Apparently, this is now fixed in LG-RDK_8.10.26-2309.3

    Changenotes

    • A new version of SmartWifi on the modem
    • Improved stability and fewer crashes with the reason "Unknown" or "RG Crash" in the modem log
    • You will no longer see 'Malformed packets' of the HomePNA protocol' when monitoring your network with, for example, Wireshark
    • You can now create a second port forward with the same internal port to another (local) IP address
    • When you set a fixed IP via the DHCP settings, the device name no longer changes to 'unknown' over time'
    • The 2.4Ghz network now also sends the country code when broadcasting
    • Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) is now correctly disabled on all modems for the 2.5GB port

  • Can anyone confirm that the updated LG-RDK_8.10.26-2309.3 Firmware is working when connected to an unmanaged 2.5G Switch?

I am still in communication with the Second Virgin media engineer who visited this time last week and requesting him to contact network operations team to push this version out to my Hub 5.

Any further information you can provide will likely be helpful.

If I remember correctly LG-RDK_8.10.9-2309.3 was the test firmware rolled out to a few users, I was one of them.

No it did not cure the problem with an unmanaged switch, fortunately I received a managed switch on that day. When i Connected it and did a Hub reset this then resolved the problem. VM then rolled me back to the current firmware at 6.30pm and I had to do another reset.

Not had a problem with EEE since.

So as far as we know there is still no fix with unmanaged devices. What was all the talk of new firmware and change logs from Sagemcom about then, a red herring?? at this point I feel as though I may as well go cut down a tree with one.

  • I've been having issues with my tp-link mesh network regularly losing internet connection, about every 3 days. Restarting my mesh network resolves the issues. My Virgin Hub 5 is in modem mode and connected to the primary tp-link deco node via the 2.5gbe port. I'm considering getting a small managed switch as mentioned here by other users. Would something like this do the job? https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-SG105E-Desktop-Easy-Smart-Ethernet/dp/B00N0OHEMA

The TP link managed swich in your post is only good for 1gbit (Speedcheck 960), which is ok if your connection is only 500. If you have the 1 GIG connection, to take full advangtage of your available speed you need a 2.5 Gbit managed switch and the rest of your components need to support 2.5 Gbit - Found this out after having 960 for 18 months, but the speed to the Hub was 1140. I spoke to some network geeks on Discord.

then you can get speeds like this:-

  • Came across this issue this weekend while trying to build a pfSense CE on Proxmox VE with a USB 3.1 2.5G Ethernet dongle on a Dell Optiplex Micro. Was getting ~80% packet loss and couldn't figure out what was causing it. After lots of playing, I ended up trying a 1Gb port, instead of the 2.5Gb port on the Super Hub 5 and it all came to life.

Ran "ethtool --set-eee [DEVICE] eee off" which turned off EEE on the WAN NIC. Popped the WAN cable back into 2.5Gb port, and hey presto, all good.

To make the change permanent, I had to update /etc/network/interfaces with:

    "pre-up /usr/sbin/ethtool --set-eee $iface eee off".

Thanks to this forum for giving me the understanding about the EEE 2.5Gb issue on the superhub. I would have had to stick to the 1Gb port otherwise, as I wouldn't have had a clue.

  • Connection stopped working suddenly yesterday and will no longer work in modem mode connected to a UniFi Cloud Gateway at 2.5Gb. Works in router mode ok, as soon as I put in MM it fails.

I am on LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5 - not sure when I received it but guessing yesterday! Don’t have an option to disable EEE on the UniFi Cloud Gateway that I can see - any other suggestions please?

sadly the Energy Efficient Enternet defaulting to "ON" causes the problems with the 2.5gig port.

might want to try looking throught the recent posts, someone cured it with a script. otherwise its a managed switch.

How does the managed switch fix work with modem mode though? I have a Unifi network with a cloud gateway so use that as my firewall/router.

  • Solution for Mac Users Experiencing Issues with Hub5 2.5G Port

If you're a Mac user encountering problems with the 2.5G port on your Hub5 while using the firmware LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5, there's a simple solution that can help you continue using the 2.5G port effectively.

    The Issue

The problem stems from the Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE) feature, which can cause compatibility issues with the Hub5's 2.5G port.

    The Solution

To resolve this, we need to force your Mac not to use EEE when communicating with the Hub5. Here's how to do it:

    1. Go to System Settings
    2. Navigate to Network
    3. Select Ethernet
    4. Click on Details
    5. Go to Hardware
    6. Click on Configure
    7. Change the setting from "Automatically" to "Manually"
    8. Ensure the duplex is set to "Full duplex" (without EEE)
    9. Click Confirm

Note: Your Ethernet connection will be disabled for a few seconds. Once reconnected, the issue should be resolved.

    Important Note

This guide is based on macOS Sequoia 15.0.1. The exact steps might vary slightly depending on your version of macOS, but the general process should be similar.

By following these steps, you should be able to continue using the 2.5G port on your Hub5 without issues.

  • Maybe I'm understanding this wrong, I've got a hub5 I've put into modem mode today after being used for months absolutely fine.. minus the spotty WiFi signal. Multiple drop outs etc

I've connected it up to a Asus RT-AX86U (non pro) which has a 1G/2.5g WAN port, luckily switchable.

If I attempt to use the router as a 2.5G device the hub 5 will not assign an address to the router. As soon as I switch it to a 1G port I get an address assigned  Everything's lovely, speeds great (apart from lacking by 140mbps)

Is this related? As it sounds like it until I log into the router via SSH and run -> pwr show.

Which comes back with a long list, most importantly showing:

    PHY EEE -> disabled.

Which to my understanding means energy efficient ethernet is disabled? So I shouldn't be having issues right? or am I going mad?

    Thanks in advance

Firmware on Hub 5 is indeed LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5

Do not use the 2.5 port until you have done this. Do you have the VM app on your mobile? try testing the connection, then do the Hub reset.

Firmware LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5 is where the problems started. It basically kills the 2.5G port on the hub.

I have a 8 port 2.5 gig managed switch plugged into the 2.5 Gig port, everything using 2.5 is routed through this. I also have a 16 port 1 gig managed switch plugged into port 2 1 gig slower devices use this. EEE is disable on both switches.

    On our wavelength

    Afternoon All,

I have recently purchased the Netgear MS308 8 Port 2.5 Gbit Switch Multi-Gigabit LAN Switch which is linked to the Hub 5.

I set the switch up and connected all my devices to the switch and all was working great all connecting perfectly.... I then noticed i had the Ethernet Lead which is Cat6 plugged into the 1ghz Port on the Hub 5.

I switched the cable to the 2.5ghz Port on the Hub 5 and now none of the devices I have connected to the switch will connect and all go offline.

The Switch is showing that the cable coming into it is running on 2.5ghz and all devices are showing either 1ghz mode or 2.5ghz mode as it should.

im totally baffled as to why this would happen, am i missing something?

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank You

Answered in your other post. That switch is unmanaged and will not work.

but this will work with the ASUS ROG Rapture GT-AX6000 and the hub 5 acting as a modem connecting through the 2.5ghz port?

  • Necro time, 2 years on and LG-RDK_7.6.20-2306.5 still on my Hub 5 and no 2.5gb port lol will only sync at 1gb (with EEE on)

I have that firmware and my hub5 works perfectly from the 2.5Ghz port to my UDM Pro.
