It turns out to be quite a fiddly matter of 1) changing your main password (tricky because you need an email address to tell VM to send their verification code to and if you can't get into emails..... it's a dead end! BUT....!) once past this it's fairly plain sailing to 2) setting a new, auto-generated password for the actuall email part of the account. You get past it by telling VM to send the verification code to a completely different email address e.g. your wife's if it's still working. (it might be that to avoid the email dead end you have to change your main logon email address to the independent one too - I did). Then after clicking 'forgot password' and getting to the verification code page, just copy the code back from your independent email into your VM account's code request window and you should then be able to change your main myvirginmedia account password and re-login using the new password. Having done that it is necessary to change the email login password which is an auto-generated process....Once logged in to myvirginmedia, click on the Account Settings box; then the Virgin Media Mail Settings box; (then you may need to get another verification code to land on the 'Mailbox App password management' page.Click the red 'generate new app password' button and follow through the steps until you get an auto-generated password in the form of 4 words separated by hyphens (e.g. abcd-efgh-ijkl-mnop). Going back to your main account login landing page, scroll down and clicking on the 'virgin media mail' box should now take you into your online emails B-Boom! At least, it did for me! The added complication now is that if you use Outlook on a PC or Mail/other mail client on a mobile then your email accounts on all those things need to have the passwords changed to the auto-generated, 4-word version you got earlier. Hope that helps! (but if it doesn't, try ringing the help line - they answered withing 2 mins for me this afternoon and eventually got it sorted.) Steve Re: 403 Forbidden error Hi Nell51, sorry to say no one is biting at this one and I'm still in the same position. Most frustrating. Here's hoping SOMEONE IN VM TECH can see the DESPARATION!!!!! Someone must have an answer....? Re: all messages from gmail going to spam Dear Coenoby, thank you so much for your considered, quick and detailed reply, it's so much appreciated! It must the the clearest, most straightforward and understandable response to an IT issue I've ever had. Thank you. And thank you for offering your help on this forum. I shall take these points up with the UK2 support people (who are always quick to respond and willing to help) and trust that they can finally get it all sorted out. I had been looking at their email offers thinking that might be the best way of resolving it and your comments now make that more likely. The point for me about a domain associated email address was not just vanity (!) but to allow the family to all share a simple address and make it easier for others to remember. With modern tech contact lists and auto-complete address bars that's not so relevant now! If UK2 can't fix this authentication issue that's the way I'll go and thank 30yrs of previous broadband providers for their free email addresses. Thanks again for taking the time to help. Steve Re: all messages from gmail going to spam Hi coenoby and thanks for thinking about this in detail. Yes, they are addressed to a private domain email address and automatically forwarded to my VM address. This is an arrangement that has been working fine for 30 years! (not always to VM but VM for the last 3 yrs). So if it's not a general VM issue, what could it be about my setup that is making VM mark my Gmail receipts as spam and not yours? I've posted a copy of headers earlier in the string . Is there anything else I should be checking? Thanks Steve Re: all messages from gmail going to spam Hi John, it's all gmails, wherever they come from. Thanks Steve Re: 403 Forbidden error Hi Kath_P I know it's been a long time but I really have to get to grips with this 'Forbidden' screen now! This is what we're actually talking about (see screenshot) I have changed the login password to the VM account as you suggested and logged in successfully. then on clicking the 'Virgin Media Mail' Quick link, the Forbidden screen immediately comes up. It's desperate, it really is. Isn't there someone at VM who can offer a non-techspeak solution to this? Thanks Steve Re: all messages from gmail going to spam Thank you Zach_R. What I think is happening here is that we're not dealing with SPAM as such but what you describe on the spam information page as: "The spam filter also checks to make sure any emails you receive have been sent legitimately by sender shown in the email. If we believe an email isn’t actually from who it claims to be from, we’ll place the message into the Spam Folder." and oddly webmail is picking out gmail under that test. That may be (I don't know!) because the gmail is being forwarded to the VM server from my domain provider (UK2.net). This is a process (Domain forwarding) which has been working for me for more than 25 years and as far as I can see it's the authentication protocols that have changed and need resetting. I understand (from speaking to someone who seemed to know!) that it is all to do with something called DKIM.... My domain provider UK2.net are convinced that they have all the right settings to authenticate gmail but maybe VM hasn't and is therefore putting it in spam. I'd be interested to have your thoughts on that because at the moment I've turned off all spam in my VM account (to get the gmail through) but am consequently getting spam in my inbox! Which I'd like to stop. Hope you can help. Steve Re: all messages from gmail going to spam Carley, just to add, I haven't made any changes to my settings recently. Steve Re: all messages from gmail going to spam Hi Carley, thank you for your comment. Last week all of my emails going to gmail accounts were returned undelivered stating there was an authentication problem. I had the same issue in 2023 and my domain provider (who forwards emails to my public domain address to my VM address for collection by my email client -phone, PC etc.) added things I don't understand, like SPF and other acronyms as well as the VM server address, which solved that issue. However, the same thing happened again last week and I got the domain provider to check again. They (quote) "added VM IPS to the DNS records which should solve the problem" and it did allow me to send to gmail addresses OK. However, I then noticed that I was not receiving any gmail emails - going to online mail I saw that all @gmail emails were going to my VM spam folder. Marking the individual email senders 'not spam' didn't make any difference, new emails from the same email addresses still went to spam. On sending the header (taken from the email VM marked as spam) to my domain provider (see header above, pasted in my earlier post) I got the following response: "From our side the forwarder seems to be set up correctly and the SPF record is set correctly. If issues persist we recommend reaching out to virgin's support to see if they are able to identify why the emails may be marked as spam (by them)." I'm not a tech person at all but can see from the header that the original email I sent is not marked as spam by gmail but the reply to me is marked as spam by VM. Please would you sort out how to not automatically mark gmail messages as spam. I still need normal spam to be marked as spam! Thank you!
