It's probably not what you want to hear, but the box sounds faulty to me.
If it gets replaced, you'll lose everything on your hard drive anyway, so I'd work through the varying levels of reset first, on the off-chance more than anything..
Home > Help & Settings > Clear or restart my box.
Each reset has an on-screen explanation of what it does, and an intentionally "awkward" keypress to prevent accidental ones.
If those resets fail, then you'll have to call faults and report your box faulty - on the usual number (150 or 0345 4541111)
