Are iPhones locked to network

Hello. 
I have a iPhone XS from virgin bought around 6/7 months ago 

I would like to know if they are locked to virgin mobile (I don’t have another network sim to try )

They used to be, but all the new ones come unlocked

Apple changed their policy in July 2017. After that, new iPhones were no longer locked to the first sim card inserted.
