I am getting an error message: NO SIGNAL CHECK EXTERNAL INPUT OR SELECT ANOTHER INPUT USING INPUT BUTTONS, but I don’t know how to do this

That usually happens when you've selected the wrong HDMI input on your TV, or that the HDMI cable has come loose from either the TV or Tivo box.
Check your cable is still attached, also check which HDMI port it's connected to on the TV and then use the TV remote to cycle through the HDMI options. It's usually called the Source button on most TV remotes, or it may a symbol like the one in the screenshot below.
You also might need to remove the HDMI cable from both devices and plug it in again, and then reboot both devices.

Thank you for the advice but after many failed attempts Virgin Media tested my connection and there is a fault with my TiVo box, a Technician’s visit has been booked to sort it out.
