Slow Wifi - average 30 on 350mb

I have been having issues with the speed of my wifi connection, I have recently had my HUB replaced after an engineer visit, but speeds are still poor. Both on my phone and laptop, I have not been able to do a test via ethernet as my laptop does not have an ethernet connection - not standard on modern laptops!

Re: Slow Wifi - average 30 on 350mb

You really do need to test with an ethernet connection so that you can determine whether you have a WAN Service problem or a local Wi-Fi problem.

You can purchase USB to ethernet gigabit dongles from the usual online suppliers.

Re: Slow Wifi - average 30 on 350mb

I seem to be getting good speeds when connected via a cable, 378Mbps, via wifi at same location 202Mbps, but on my phone using the speed test.net app I am currently maxing out at 39.9MBps, in a secondary room with a wifi booster i wasnt even able to connect to the speed test, despite showing connection to the router etc.

This problem seems to be intermittent, even causing issues with wifi printing, even though all devices showing a good connection to the wifi.

Any advice on how this can be fixed?

Re: Slow Wifi - average 30 on 350mb

If your ethernet connections are good but Wi-Fi is bad you need to obtain some third party equipment that is much, much more powerful than the VM supplied kit and once set up have wondered why they waited for so long.

Re: Slow Wifi - average 30 on 350mb

The WiFi settings can be adjusted on homehub 3 to increase your WiFi speed internally. Just copy screenshot settings.  The thing that is making the difference is the Channel Width settings.  Setting it to 20/40/80 made a significant difference to my wifi speedtests when in the same room as the router. It was suggested by someone on here last summer. Note it doesn't speed up the downstream/upstream connections your router has to the outside world just speeds up the wifi connection between a device and router inside the home.

in a web browser navigate to 192.168.0.1

login with setting password from bottom of homehub.

from menu down left goto advanced settings > wireless > wireless signal

Disable channel optimisation, select 20/40/80 from channel width drop down. I leave channel as auto and I tick enable 5ghz.

Under wireless security section down left menu you can rename your network wireless name (SSID)  for the 2.4ghz or 5ghz. I like to separate mine with a _5G after the name on the 5ghz so I can specifically connect to the 5Ghz version on devices that support the faster WiFi.

What this will do is when you search for wireless networks on the device your connecting from it will show "VM2123457_5G" and "VM21234567"  or whatever you have renamed them to for the 2.4ghz and 5ghz wireless connections.

Thanks for the advice - are there any features to particularly look out for to improve on the Vigin hub? I always assumed the way they marketed it it was the bees knees.

Re: Slow Wifi - average 30 on 350mb

Thanks I have made these changes on my router - initial speed test has shown a marked improvement, from 160 to 200Mbps, but will monitor over the coming days.

Does anyone have any experence with the Wifi Boosters? I have a pair that have been ghosted to the router, and have tried to connect via the LAN connection to the laptop but the connection on the laptop shows no internet connection via the wire, only shows via wifi connection.
