SamKnows RealSpeed test

Nickcrouch
Tuning in

I am connect to my Hub 3 wifi.  I try the SamKnows RealSpeed test and it says:

"No router found

Make sure you’re on the same WiFi network as your Virgin Media Hub.
The Virgin Media Hub must also be on router mode"

I am still connected and internet is working.........

What am I doing wrong?

Yes this works fine 😀

(why does the VM reference not work????)

If I am paying for 350Mbps, why does SamKnows only give c.225Mbps download?

Cheers, Nick

I'm assuming this is over wifi?  If so, VM only guarantee speeds wired to the Hub.  You need to test with Cat 5e or better cable, wired to a gigabit capable device.

I was under the impression that SamKnows tested the speed to the router, so the wifi link is irrelevant?

Using the Speedtest.SamKnows.com link then unfortunately it does a test to the device & isn't incredibly accurate in comparison to the real speed they have on the Hub 4.

** I work for VirginMedia but all opinions posted here are my own.

So getting a "real speed test" to the router, to test the performance of the service is only possible with ethernet technology that is hardly ever available is reality, and a test on the router initiated by a wifi device is not possible - so in real life we can't test performance????

The other thing I don't understand is why I get such variability.  I could understand that a wifi test is consistently less than the promised level, but I test speeds at quiet times and sometimes its 50Mbps, and sometimes its 180Mbps and I have got 347Mbps on one occasion.  I don't believe there is anything wrong with my equipment - I believe the service is highly variable.  Why shouldn't I get consistently 300Mbps for example?

The Hub 3 doesn't yet have the firmware to support SamKnows RealSpeed, that's why you are seeing the error. It's coming soon though.

Hi, unfortunately the Hub3 isn't compatible with the Samknows/realspeed.  It will only work with the hub 4 in 1 Gig areas.  Speeds may vary due to how busy the speedtest servers are at that time.  Have you tried speedtest.net?

Many mobile devices only go to 220max, it's not always a fault and just the amount of antennae in the device
