1gig deal - only getting ~50% of the download speed

Hello. I've recently got the 1gig deal along with the Hub 4, but I'm only getting around half of the download speed that is advertised (upload consistently at 50mb+ so no issues there).

*FYI: I only have a basic understanding of IT related things, mostly a plug n play guy - I just wanna get the service I pay for*

Connected straight from the back of the Hub to my laptop via ethernet with no switches/splitters.

- Tried different cables, cat5e/6 and up

- Rebooted/pinhole reset the Hub/laptop with and without anything connected

- Tried modem only setting on the Hub

- Tried various network settings on the laptop such as 1gig full duplex, no EEE/green ethernet and so on.

No change.

Will paste downstream/upstream/configuration into 3 separate replies to this.

You are getting the full 1GB to the Hub, so the circuit is working.  However, your power levels are too high on the Downstream and will need a technician to sort this out.

What device are you speed testing with, as VM do not guarantee wifi speeds.   All speed tests should be done with a Cat 6a cable wired directly to the Hub, using a gigabit capable device.

I'm a Very Insightful Person, I'm here to share knowledge, I don't work for Virgin Media. Learn more

But from where? is it over the internet or  samknows realspeed not so real and VM have implemented with samknows knowing test from 1st hop to hub

It is a wired connection and has been this whole time (don't really care for wifi), I've tested 3 different cables - cat5e/8 (my own) and cat6 (VM's)

Well we don't really know the inner workings of samknows realspeed with VM for the downstream so anything is questionable so could the way the downstream is tested by the hub detecting a samknows realspeed test and the hub connects to the 1st hop to do a speed test with the hub and sends the test to samknows? Or what if its by UDP or ICMP to the hub and mirrored 3x times at the 1st hop gateway so samknows sends 1/3 of packets and VM mirrors then to for the hub to receive 1Gb and the hub sends how much it received...it would explain why I see a odd number of ICMP timestamps per 1 ping and get 3 replies from VM gateway.

Look up the specifications for cat 6 and ensure your cables meet all those specs and has the correct markings on the cable
