Malware warning via email

Hi,

I've received an email from internet-security@virginmedia.com with a warning about a device on my home network potentially having malware:

"Our reference: VMIS5-MALWARE-F008407148"

"To protect our customers, we work with a number of not-for-profit organisations that gather information about internet connections that appear to be at risk of things like malware infections. On 11 September 2020, one detected that gumblar , a piece of malware, was present on a device using your internet connection."

To my understanding Gumblar is a trojan from 2009 which targets devices with older Windows OSs, i.e. pre-Windows 7. None of the devices on my network have these OSs, however despite this I have run checks on all Windows devices using both antivirus software and Malwarebytes, and all came up negative for Gumblar.

Is this email legitimate, and if so, could it be a false positive given that multiple anti-malware scans have turned up nothing? Could my works VPN have anything to do with it since those have been known to trigger false positives?

Cheers,

Concrete

Re: Malware warning via email

Got the same email through.

Scans also came back clean. I also use a VPN to work remotely and my oldest installation of Windows would be 7 or 10.

Can we get some kind of official comment on this, or an insight into what kind of internet traffic triggers this detection?

Re: Malware warning via email

Just to give the thread a quick update;

I dropped the OP a private message. The response from the OP tells me this has now been resolved via our IT team, with a factory reset on the hub also performed

Kindest regards,

David_Bn

Re: Malware warning via email

It's great that the issue was resolved in this case. Any chance you could elaborate on the cause or how to proceed with getting it resolved?

Re: Malware warning via email

It would be good to know how this was resolved, as we have just had a similar email and are unsure whether we really have an issue or not.

Re: Malware warning via email

If you could add us to the process as well it would be appreciated. Such a statement from VM is quite serious and it seems like it was left open ended.

Thank you

Re: Malware warning via email

Adding another warning received post here rather than starting a new thread. I've just received the second warning about this issue, all devices are running Win 10 and have been swept with AV and Malware software and I've done a factory reset on the router. I am running the router in modem mode and using a Linksys router.
