WiFi repeatedly dropping throughout day and night

Hi all,

As the title says, our WiFi  connection repeatedly drops throughout day and night.  This is incredibly frustrating whilst WFH, as it then need to restart my VPN and close and reconnect all the software used for work.  This happens many many times throughout the day, so it is having a serious effect on my productivity (not to mention the difficulties cause by dropping out of Teams and Zooms calls throughout the day).

I set up a BQM a good while back, so there should be a decent amount of data to look at:

My BQM

Router status is all set out below in a couple of posts.

I have tried hardwiring into my home PC, and the connection seems much more solid (can play games for several hours without noticing a drop, whereas on WiFi it would drop multiple times), so it is my suspicion that this is a WiFi / router issue, but I don't have the knowledge to interpret the data I am sharing.

Sadly, I can't hard wire into my work laptop, so that is not a solution.

I work perhaps 8m from the router, which is in a cupboard in the next room, separated by just some wooden and glass doors.

Please could someone help with this?  I am at my wit's end...

There is your answer  ↑

The problem with Wi-Fi is that it can be brilliant at breakfast time and useless by lunchtime and you haven't changed anything, BUT, something somewhere has changed, then you can spend hours and even days trying to find a fix for something that can be totally out of your control.

If you remove all the internal walls, electronic and electrical devices, metallic pipes and conduits and wrap the whole building in a thick lead shield you will have a good chance of getting decent Wi-Fi from a VM Hub.

Many people have accepted that the VM Wi-Fi is very poor and have purchased third party equipment that is much, much more powerful than the VM supplied kit and once set up have wondered why they waited for so long.

Re: WiFi repeatedly dropping throughout day and night

Why can't you connect the work laptop by ethernet cable ?

Re: WiFi repeatedly dropping throughout day and night

It doesn't have an ethernet port (Dell XPS 13).

In any event, whilst I can use the ethernet cable for a gaming session in the evening on my main PC, with an 18 month old running around, I don't want them trailing through the house during the day.

What are my options improving the WiFi?

Replace the Virgin supplied kit? Boosters?

As I said, I am really no distance at all from the router, and it didn't used to be anywhere near this bad.

Re: WiFi repeatedly dropping throughout day and night

You can't remove the VM Hub.

You can purchase additional kit that has better Wi-Fi capability than the current Hub/Router.

You can Pick from ...

A Gigabit enabled Wi-Fi Router.

A Mesh System.

Wi-Fi Access Points

or even mix and match.
