Please explain T3 Timeouts

Hi All,

I see many people having problems with "T3 Timeout", but I have not seen a simple explanation as to what it means/indicates and where in the system between me and VM they occur. Can someone enlighten me?

For example

T4 Timeouts

Re: Please explain T3 Timeouts

In simple terms it means that your Hub has failed to receive its routine regular response from the CMTS (the next point up cable network) for more than a set number of tries. It then assumes it has lost connection and has to start setting up a fresh connection.  The most common reason for this is too much noise on the line.

Re: Please explain T3 Timeouts

A few T3 timeouts are nothing to worry about, but lots would be. It's normally noise on the Upstream circuit and the Hub can't get a response from the CMTS. So it just retries and this is a T3 error.

PreRS errors are corrected errors in the data transmission and nothing to worry about as they have been corrected.  PostRS errors are the bad ones, these are data transmission errors that cannot be corrected. Typically these errors occur on noisy  circuits and need an engineer to resolve.

That's a simple view, for more concise and proper detailed information, Google is your friend.

Re: Please explain T3 Timeouts

When was your hub last rebooted?

Rebooting will reset them back to zero again.

Re: Please explain T3 Timeouts

Thanks for the response.

So nothing I can do to rectify and needs an engineer, most likely making corrections in one of the green street cabinets.

When would depend on if you mean by myself or the stupid Hub 3!
But seriously, yesterday afternoon by the Hub several times, by me last night several times (including a reset) to try to get a decent connection, which I eventually got. Then by the Hub first thing this morning and they by myself several times (again including a reset) to try to get a decent connection, but it's still rubbish.
Also having problems accessing the HUB to get a report, browser times out on most attempts. Speed test check results are generally OK, but take a long time to initially respond.

Re: Please explain T3 Timeouts

Your other stats don't look too bad, although it would be interesting to see them again after a few days' run without restarts if that was possible.

Can you set up a free BQM and post a link here ?  https://www.thinkbroadband.com/broadband/monitoring/quality
