High latency and issues downloading

Recently been having issues with rubbish WiFi so bough a tplink deco S4 three pack which gave me WiFi everywhere but yesterday when downloading things it would download about 12mb stop for about 20 download another wee bit then stop.

So I took tplink out and started a monitor but it's showing high spikes of latency.

Re: High latency and issues downloading

I'm using a not dissimilar Deco M4, and it's been faultless,  doubt that's the cause of the problem.  Your BQM however looks very spikey, so it could be indicating a problem with your cable connection.

I am assuming that you either had the Hub in modem mode, or set the Deco to access point mode?  If both are in router mode there's potential for a range of unwelcome effects.

Let's have a check of the hub status data: Connect to the hub by clicking on this link http://192.168.0.1/ if the hub is in router mode.  That should pull up the log in page for the hub.  But don't log in, just click on the link "Check router status"  That'll bring up a window with five tabs.  All we need is the full contents of the three titled Downstream, Upstream, Network log, and you'll need to post that as text not screenshots.  Note that the tabs extend down below what's initially visible. so you need to scroll down or use a shortcut like Ctrl-A if using a keyboard, copy it (Ctrl-C), then paste it (Ctrl-V) into a reply here.  Post that, do the same for the Upstream and Network log.  You'll get an error message when you post the Network log, just click on "post" a second time.

Re: High latency and issues downloading

Does it happen on a wired connection?

Post the Network, Upstream and Downstream logs from the hubs admin pages

EDIT: Someone got there first 🙂

Re: High latency and issues downloading

There's nothing obviously wrong with your hub's stats.  A few too many critical errors for my liking, but not enough to pick anything out.  Sometimes that's because intermittent noise or power faults don't always leave muddy footprints in the log (and the various resets and restarts have cleared the error counters).

However, what I think might be a cause is lockdown and the recent rash of console and game releases, that are driving VM data traffic much higher.  If you look at your BQM, things are OK from half midnight to early-mid morning, get progressively worse, and then stop abruptly at half midnight.  This doesn't pass my entirely unofficial criteria for over-utilisation (network congestion) but at a low level what's going on is that there's so much traffic that a handful of data packets are getting queued for a few milliseconds whilst the network catches up.  If subsequent days have a similar pattern then I'd be even more certain of that diagnosis.

To adapt from a message I wrote earlier, If I'm correct VM won't do anything about it (and won't even register that level of latency performance as a fault), but it is potentially good-ish news because the very marginal nature may mean it resolves itself as and when we get out of this lockdown chaos, and/or when your local area is upgraded to DOCSIS 3.1 and a reasonable number of Hub 4's are in service.  I'm always happy to put the boot in on VM when I think it's deserved, and recommend options for complaining and changing ISP, in your case I'd strongly suggest accepting that things are difficult at the moment, and hopefully your latency issues will resolve as this year's game release season wanes, and further out the world moves back to some semblance of normal patterns of working.

Also, wait and see what the forum staff advise when they get round to your post, there could be other explanations.

Re: High latency and issues downloading

Yeah I'm getting that sort of feeling about the consoles and just general increase in load. My contract is up in January anyway so will see if it gets better or what their response is

I think docsis3.1 is in my area as I can get 1gig apparently.

Re: High latency and issues downloading

Looks like you may be right as it has spiked up again since about 4pm. Do you know if there is anything that can be done about it or is it just a case of deal with it basically.
