Cancelled Contract

I cancelled my contract on 5th Jan (after 5 straight hours of continued crap from Virgin on WhatsApp) and was told it would end on 4th Feb. I haven't received any 'official' email or notification apart from the WhatsApp message on the 5th Jan. Should I have been sent some kind of communication regarding the cancelation date ? My only other option is to cancel the direct debit if not as no one at Virgin appears to want to listen ?
