Phone adapter

I'm trying to set up a home phone for the first time. I have connected the phone to the socket in the wall but that dosen't seem to be working. I phoned up the help line and they said it should be plugged straight into the router, but i don't have an adapter (I think I may have once had one when i got my hub but that was a long time ago and i don't know where it is anymore). I was on the call for over an hour while they tried to find out if he could get an adapter sent to me but he couldn't get through to the right department. He then gave me another number to ring nd transferred me but i was cut off. I tried the number he gave me but it keeps saying line busy. How can i get hold of an adapter?
