New Fibre Phone Adaptor

I have two house phones, one upstairs and one downstairs. Do I need another adapter? My main house phone is downstairs but my broadband hub is upstairs, can't move the Hub ( connected to my internal network ) and can't move main phone!!! So what am I suppose to do?

On top of all this, do I need the Fibre Phone Adapter at all, as my Broadband Hub is still connect to a co-axial cable, I don't have an optic fibre cable coming into the house?

Hey @Entoman56,

Welcome to the community and thanks for taking the time to post your issue on the forums.
We can arrange for extensions to be installed in your home but your phone would need to be plugged directly into the hub, if you have cordless phones it would need for the main unit to be plugged into your hub to work.

You would need a phone adaptor to plug your handset into the hub, your phone line will use your existing broadband connection, we will not be installing any other cabling as part of your home phone changeover.

Thanks for the quick reply.

So your're saying I could plug my second phone into the Broadband but then I would lose the use of my second downstairs phone, unless an extension cable (with another adpater)  is run all the way down to it from the Hub. Are Virgin Media going to do this for me! They are making changes to my Virgin Media system which works perfectly well and over the years have not had a lot of trouble with.

I would need the two phones, as I work night shifts and have to turn the ringer off on the upstairs phone ( as not to wake me ) while I sleep, leaving the downstairs phone availible to other household members.

Thanks for coming back to us @Entoman56, the change to fibre phone is an instruction from the government and has to be completed by 2025 as the older phone network will be closed down, we are choosing to upgrade our customers as soon as we can, more information about the change over from Virgin can be found here and the government here.

We would be able to install the extensions for in your home for free as part of the change over to the fibre network. The main handset that you have would need to be plugged into the hub and any other handset could be plugged into an extension, you wouldn't need another adaptor to do this.

The OFCOM website is very specific that the changeover is being carried out by Openreach and Virgin Media and not as a result of any instructions from the government or OFCOM.

OFCOM have regulations in place to make it a condition of the changeover that the suppliers must provide emergency phone access, should the internet or mains power not be available.

Morning Kevinti28

Thanks for coming back to us. It says this if you do not have a mobile phone, unable to use one or if having mobile signal issues in the home. Does this apply to you? If so, we'll provide you with an Ebul, that will if having a power cut, enable you to call the emergency services.

Greetings;

Have just received notification of my landline service being turned over to VOIP. I have viewed the FAQ's on the VM website (especially those pertaining to other devices like extensions and voicemail recorders) and have questions, namely:

My hub is situated in an upstairs bedroom/workshop hard wired (via ethernet) to my adjacent PC and and downstairs (via ethernet) to my Tivo TV box. However, my primary phone and voicemail recorder are situated downstairs - currently connected to VM's copper service connection box - adjacent to my TIVO box. The second phone is situated within the main bedroom and the third (adjacent to my PC) within the above bedroom/workshop.

In view of this, would I be correct to assume (that to make all of this work) the incoming VM copper connection would be physically disconnected at the VM service connection box reversing the string of phones, I.e. the phone within my bedroom/workshop would now become the primary phone with the others acting as extensions?

From a technical point of view, this would make sense as the current hard wiring for all of the phones could still be utilised, I.e. the (now) primary phone would be the one connected to the adapter?

Lastly (and controversially), as this would effectively do away with the hard copper phone line coming into the property; would it also be safe to assume that the landline standing charge would be dropped? Controversial question indeed, but as the VOIP phone service would be over "fibre optic" how could the user be expected to pay a standing charge for a dedicated service which would no longer exists - just asking?

I look forward to all responses.

Cheers

Explanation here of how VM can modify your phone wiring. VM should make any wiring modifications free of charge

You 'line rental' does not change under the new arrangements as you will still be using the same phone service/number from VM, from the customer's POV it is just the method of connection that has changed.

Hi @bw41101

Thanks for posting on our community forum

As explained by goslow above, we'll be happy to make any wiring modifications via a tech visit free of charge - as for the line rental this would still stand and the charge will not be revoked. Please do let me know if you would like the wiring modified

Greetings again;

Thanks for the prompt response - it looks like I was correct in my assumption regarding the back feeding of the extensions to my hub. One question though, the last extension box situated near to my hub contains no passive components, I.e. a non master - does this need to be changed? I ask, If yes I have some (component populated) master boxes available - it would simply be a matter of switching the face plates over accordingly.

As for the offer of a VM tech attendance - yes in this instance please. Especially as my current VM master box appears to be suffering from an intermittent socket connection which (if moved) sometimes causes a drop out when I'm using the phone - might as well address this at the same time.

Look forward to any further correspondences accordingly.
