Unable to play games or watch online streams due to constant latency spikes

Hi there,

We upgraded to Virgin Media in December after being with Sky for years, over the lockdown - Sky was horrible and was down for several hours at a time, multiple times during the week and made it almost impossible to work from home and then relax after work. So we decided to move to Virgin, as we heard good things from friends who had done the same.

When we moved to Virgin - we've had maybe 1 disconnect a month since December, which is perfectly fine in my eyes. It's networking - it can have it's issues on the best of days.

However, these past few weeks to a month or so (April 2021) - I am literally unable to play any sort of online game and can no longer watch streams on Twitch in a HD quality without them freezing every 5-10 seconds, even 480p has its problems at times - thes are issues we have never had before, on any network. I have managed to get online and play games later at night and during the weekend nights aswell, but even then, the spikes still happen - just not as common.

I can see my latency in Call of Duty spike up to 400ms every 20 seconds or so which makes it unplayable. Being restricted to using my own internet during certain hours of the day is an absolute disgrace and making me wonder why I ever bothered switching network.

Has anyone come across this issue before? I know it's highly unlikely this will get resolved, as is the case for most network issues that I've been reading up on, but at least it's worth a try.

Thanks

Re: Unable to play games or watch online streams due to constant latency spikes

I've been having the exact same issue with no luck! My Virgin connection was completely fine until a couple months ago when the latency spikes started. So frustrating; makes it impossible to play games online.

Re: Unable to play games or watch online streams due to constant latency spikes

Had your issues since January, Battlefield and warzone unplayable between 9.00am - midnight after that it was ok, lagging and disconnects every game so had to stop playing, Virgin gave me fix dates from 5th Feb - 26th April and still not fixed, cancelled my Virgin contract M350 and went with Sky superfast (Only 70 Download speed) but the games now run smoothly, the issue is congestion and with many office workers continuing to work from home this will go on for many months, i was with Virgin for 15 Years but enough was enough, hope you get it sorted out.

Re: Unable to play games or watch online streams due to constant latency spikes

Hi @Camit26 thanks for posting and welcome to our community.

I am really sorry to hear of the latency issues you're reporting and the impact it is having on your online gaming.  I have had a look from here and cannot find anything to explain the issues you're describing.  Are you having the issues via a wired or wireless connection?

Regards

Re: Unable to play games or watch online streams due to constant latency spikes

Hi I am having these on a wired connection. Have checked all the cables and connections as advised on the website so not sure what else to do. Currently using a Hub 3 on the M200 package.

Hi Camit26

What device are you gaming on and does it happen on one game or numerous games?
