Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

An analogy that has come to mind regarding this issue:

The residents of a county all start to identify that their water is no longer colourless, but instead a shade of bright green.  Lots of residents post about this on the water supplier's forums, all saying the same thing: their water is green.

The forum staff look at one of these people's supply, and conclude nothing can be done because the pipe entering this individual's house is 5mm too narrow.  They'll need an engineer to sort that before they can do anything else.

Meanwhile, the water is still green all over the county.

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

The findings about different IP addresses is interesting. As someone mentioned, this shouldn't really impact on your routing. A trace route during the problem time to a node exhibiting the issue from the two different Virgin IPs would be really interesting. If the two tests take the same route, and one shows a high latency and one a low latency to a Virgin hop in the path, it would imply some sort of traffic shaping, inspection or throttling that's filtered by IP. If it's some analysis of traffic then the analysing node can't handle the throughput at peak time.

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

Hi @johnnykimble

Due to the BQM posts you have shared, I can see that an issue is occurring for you most evenings. Therefore I have booked a technician for you, I booked the latest appointment so the issues should happen hen the technician is there. Please log in to your My Virgin Media account here to check the time and date of your appointment. Please let me know if you are still experiencing this issue after your technician appointment.

Thanks

Serena

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

Hi @Serena_C,

Many thanks for arranging that but I'd like to politely decline the offer of an engineer visit at this time as I'm certain this has nothing to do with the local setup within my home, or my connection to the street terminal, or the connection from the terminal on the street to Virgin's core network.

This issue is more likely a problem within Virgin's core network, or its interconnections.

As well as the numerous reports on this thread, I'm monitoring a friend's connection, also on Virgin but based in Belfast. His connection is showing the same issue, though he hasn't noticed as he's not relying on real-time applications such as gaming.

I suspect this is an issue with hundreds, if not more, of your customers at least in the Belfast, Greater Belfast or wider area. This issue began on 6th April and has been consistently happening since then. It makes online gaming unusable. Personally I reported this issue via the forums on the 8th April, while others mentioned it on the 6th.

I should add the slow hops appear to be:

5 112 ms 113 ms 111 ms tcl5-ic-4-ae5-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.252.192.246]

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

I received a text message earlier telling me my issue had been fixed, and to reset my router and wait half an hour.

Needless to say at this stage, same issues again tonight even after that..

@johnnykimble I doubt you'd have got an engineer. It seems the purpose of this forum is to make it look like things are being done for people who happens to Google their issues and find this forum.

edit: To be fair.. even though the BQM is showing increased latency, speedtests, ping and trace-routes are actually showing good numbers right now.

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

For completeness, here is a ping of the two trouble Virgin IPs outside peak hours (7am this morning):

Pinging tcl5-ic-4-ae5-0.network.virginmedia.net [62.252.192.246] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 62.252.192.246: bytes=32 time=24ms TTL=60
Reply from 62.252.192.246: bytes=32 time=22ms TTL=60
Reply from 62.252.192.246: bytes=32 time=21ms TTL=60
Reply from 62.252.192.246: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=60
Pinging 212.250.14.162 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 212.250.14.162: bytes=32 time=28ms TTL=53
Reply from 212.250.14.162: bytes=32 time=25ms TTL=53
Reply from 212.250.14.162: bytes=32 time=31ms TTL=53
Reply from 212.250.14.162: bytes=32 time=20ms TTL=53

These results show latencies to Virgin nodes that are ten times less than those during the busy hour/problem time to the same Virgin nodes.

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

I'm relieved to report that last night was the first since 6th April where there hasn't been a problem. I was able to use online gaming without issues and the BQM verified the issue wasn't there:

My Broadband Ping - High Ping Issue Stadia

Has anyone else noticed a change?

Thanks
JK

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

Yes, no problems here last night.  I've had no "spike" for 4 days now, so fingers crossed.  I did, however, get a remote reboot at 03:00am 17th for some reason.  I only noticed as I never reboot the Hub, so when the uptime was in Hours, I knew it was done.

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

Fingers crossed indeed but looking hopeful. I checked my Hub 3 and there haven't been any restarts. Will check tonight and pay back hey tomorrow with the status.

Btw, OT but on the subject of latency, do you have a Hub 4? If so what latency/ping rtt do get between an ethernet device and the hub? I ask because my Hub 3 only gives 3-4ms, when I'd really expect <1ms. Just wondering if this was any different for the Hub 4.

Thanks,

JK

Re: High Latency to Virgin Core Nodes during Peak Hours

Day 12 .. no change in issue for me unfortunately. I still have a few days of cooling off period left, and I'm getting closer to using it.
