Gaming lag when more than one game being played online

Hi! I have a question - so we have a virgin hub 3.0 and 200mb package. Which should be good enough to handle 2 games and a stream at the same time at the least. Our ps5 is connected via ethernet direct to the router, and the laptop is on WiFi connection.

However, when I play a game such as League of Legends on the laptop on WiFi, it will slow down the connection considerably enough to adversely affect gameplay on the ps5 (such as Fifa). I have thought about limiting bandwidth to the connection to the laptop but in all honestly it makes no sense to me..as it should be handling it fine.. as well as the virgin router hub 3 has no QoS options.

What can we do about this?  The ps5 is definitely connecting through LAN and the game on the laptop being played on WiFi doesn't have any issues at all (aside from the random lag spike or when it decides to be connected to 2.4 instead of 5ghz randomly).

Is there anyway of getting an upgrade to the hub 4? Would this help?  We also have poor WiFi at the back of our 3 bed semi upstairs which isn't the main issue (well it will be when our little one wants to game in his bedroom when he's older!!)

Thanks

Not an answer but more of an observation on gaming.  I had VM 100 and also a VDSL 80/20 line for gaming.  This BT was used for 2 Xboxes and showed no problems when running both Xboxes concurrently.  So, I can only assume the problem is not with the  line speed of 100 from VM.

I would say the problem is more with the Router or your line quality, and also I would never game over wifi.  😉

If you post your power levels and network log we can comment.  Also setup a BQM for monitoring  www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

As for the wifi, split the SSID and you can manually select the Bands for each device.  Also disable the Smart Optimisation of the wifi.

• Access your Hub by navigating to 192.168.0.1
• Login with the default login info (on base of Hub) unless you've already updated it.
• Go to Advanced Settings > Wireless > Security
• Under Wireless Frequency 2.4GHz change the Wifi Network Name (SSID), suggest append _2 to the end.
• Repeat for the Wireless Frequency 5GHz, suggest append _5 to the end and click on Apply changes
• Try to avoid spaces and periods in the SSID names as they can cause issues with certain devices.

Hi - sorry I have been away over the weekend!  I will try this evening and report back.

Still having the same issue regarding computer on wifi when being used for gaming making ps5 ethernet connection slow..

I have posted my graph from last night below. Splitting the bands worked for my wifi not randomly switching but the main issue remains. Would getting a mesh system prevent this? I am at a lost as I can't do anything with the virgin router compared to other routers 😕

Personally, I would use modem mode and in your case, get a Mesh system, something like the Deco M5 with at least 2 units to start with.  I've been with VM for many, many years and always put any Hub I've had into modem mode as I have my own IT kit.

However, none of this will be any good if your VM Broadband circuit is poor.  To check this can you post your levels, Pre and PostRS errors and Network log  from the Hub please?   Your BQM is not too bad, by the way.  Once we see the levels we can comment further.
