virgin media email I do not own redirecting to personal email account

I keep receiving emails to my personal email account which appears to be being sent to a Virginmedia email account.

the email alias is <mr my first name and last name>@virginmedia.com but it seems to belong to someone else.

Is there any way of removing this alias?

Just to clarify something. Alias accounts were part of the @blueyonder.co.uk service prior to VM taking it over,. If the mystery address is  xxxxxx@virginmedia.com that means it s not an alias but a separate mailbox in its own right. As such it needs the VN customer who set up that address to delete it.

To follow on from that, a little bit of clarification needed I'm afraid.

Firstly, you say "My personal email", so is that a non VM address, perhaps a Gmail or Outlook account? Or is it a VM address linked to your VM broadband account?

Secondly I am interested in your comment "seems to belong to someone else".  Forgive me but "Seems" kind of suggests that you are not sure. 😐

You can check whether it is yours by signing in to your "My Virgin Media" account (where you go to view your monthly VM bills) here: https://my.virginmedia.com/home/signIn

Then check if the address appears there under the "My profile" tab or, if it is not there, click on the "Manage accounts" tab and see if it is listed there.

If this mystery address appears in your "My Virgin Media" account it is under your control. Providing it is not your Primary email account you can delete it. However even if you cannot delete it you can go in and disable the Autoforward  setting that presumably is causing its emails to be sent on to your "personal email".

If necessary it will need one of the VM Forum Team (VM employees) to check on this mystery email address. They will catch  up with this thread in a day or so and contact you for more information, They will take that via the private message (PM) facility on the forum. Well done for not posting the full address, wait for the forum team to contact you and take the information privately.

Re: virgin media email I do not own redirecting to personal email account

It would help to see the headers of the emails (with the first parts of any email addresses suitably redacted).

However it should be noted that the To: address in an email isn't necessarily where an email is sent to.  There are two other types of addresses to consider.

Cc: or carbon copy - email addresses to which the mail is sent in addition to the named recipient.
Bcc or Blin Carbon Copy - similar to Cc: except that the names of the additional recipients are hidden from everyone.

Spammers often make use of the Bcc feature in email to hide who they are sending mails to.

Re: virgin media email I do not own redirecting to personal email account

Ok it’s definitely not mine.

ive had emails in the past sent to this address from things like counsellors and relatives of this individual who shares my name.
it’s not a recent thing it has been happening for , well, years really.
The email is being sent to this mystery email account but actually goes to my gmail address. If I’m not mistaken, virgin media used gmail a few years ago when I last had an account with virgin ( about 8 years ago?) So perhaps it was repurposed and now for some reason another customer has this email address but the forward is going to my gmail account??

it must belong to someone else as I am not related or aware of one of the senders.

Re: virgin media email I do not own redirecting to personal email account

You need to read from the bottom upwards.

What I see there is one virginmedia address sending to another but then we see this:

X-Sieve: Pigeonhole Sieve 0.4.24.2 (9471f26d)
X-Sieve-Redirected-From: virginrecipient@virginmedia.com

This tells us that the recipient has a filter rule in place.  It may well be that they don't know it's redirecting to the wrong address.

If you read upwards this filter results in mail to that address being sent to your address by Virgin Media's system.  Which you then see delivering the mail onwards.

If you sit tight the Forum Team will get to the thread but it can take them around 7 days to do so.  They should be able to escalate this to the relevant team.

Re: virgin media email I do not own redirecting to personal email account

BTW I wanted to address your theory regarding the redirect.

While it sounded plausible there are a number of holes in it.

  1. While Virgin Media did use Google's apps for ISP service,  Google shut down this service a number of years ago.  I remember the transition well.
  2. MX records work on a domain level, not an individual email address  level.  When VM moved to their own platform, the MX records no longer pointed to Gmails servers, but instead pointed to servers run by one of VM's Liberty Global Partners.
  3. Any filter rules on the Gmail platform were not migrated to the new platform.  It was up to users to set them up again once the migration was complete.  It would be interesting to know just how many years ago this problem started.
