Spam - VM's filter is useless!

I'm so sick & tired of VM's utterly useless Spam filter! VM is happy to allow any messages about Viagra, Bitcoin scams, phishing attacks through, but blocks many real e-mails! I've had 20 scam e-mails in the last 3 days trying to get me to renew Norton anti-virus (which I don't have). I mark them as Spam each time, but the system never learns!

As I said the system also blocks proper e-mails sometimes - e-mails from a Dutch company I deal with are always blocked, no matter how many times I mark them as not Spam. I even had an individual e-mail from a UK company acknowledging an order classed as spam.

Its useless, and its always been useless, and it never gets better! I wouldn't mind if the system ever learnt - isn't that what modern sophisticated systems are supposed to do???

Zero spam for me since I added the filter for the Oct 2020 date.

Hi ,

Any self respecting mail platform should be scanning for viruses ,  but with out a #virginmedia email platform engineer stating  what AV they use on there platform it’s for me to guess. When virgin was with google email the answer was yes they scan your emails for Virus’s. now Virginmedia took email back in-house it’s an unknown. But likely it is scanned.

Hi ,

That’s great news glad to here it.

At the risk of being a little pedantic, the particular spam messages in question, do not appear to be a virus, but are probably a scam, and are certainly spam. That is why "anti-virus" systems do not spot them. They will not cause any damage unless the recipient acts upon the message content.

Mine are successfully ditched by VM's webmail using the date trick so helpfully shown here. Just a shame VM can't get their act together to do the same.

Hi ,

the problem Virginmedia has , as it employees many young people. I know as I was one of them 25 years ago. It’s all about burning through your calls , answering email with default templates and passing people to FAQs .

You need your problem , like spam to be cought by that nerdy individual who takes time to understand the issue gather relivant technical information so that 3rd line takes it’s seriously.
So many of our tick in the days passed to 3rd line had poor info or the agent didn’t have a clue .

Seriously adding a date to a email filter can’t be that hard , updating there spam house database as well.

ta glad thing are now improving in the inbox

VM has a spam filter? You are joking...

I get up to 50 spam emails every day.

Using mobile imap, you don't have the facility to flag it as spam - every other email provider has this facility, but not VM...

VM is not an email provider.

They should just stop offering emails. It would force people to a better email system that isn't going to be lost when they leave VM

VIRUS

You are correct if a scam email is not opened, no links clicked and no attachments downloaded then the little chance of  a virus.

Virus can hide in attachments, links to websites may download malware/virus or .exe files disguised as images or in the actual html code.

The virus in html can be fragmented so it is spread across a few emails to avoid detection and then re-assembles the virus after the emails have been opened, many spam emails are repeated over and over, the spammer  send any rubbish email but the real intent may be to infect a computer.

So although antivirus does not detect spam it might detect a virus  if an attachment was opened, so the spam may be just a ploy to delver a virus or malware, spyware, ransomware etc.

Some scam emails are designed to look genuine so people will click on them.

I have had many virus and malware infections so I try to avoid them now and email is one source, the other being websites or fake phishing websites often linked to emails via links in the message of the email.
