I’ve also suffered the exact same attack, just before I received the email I noticed that all of my previous emails, years of them, had disappeared

Does anyone know if I am able to get these emails back?

Hoping for some good news!

Regards Ian

Regrettably:

  • if the missing email cannot be found within the your mailbox, i.e. in the Trash folder or elsewhere then they are unrecoverable
  • the onus is on the customer to maintain backups of their emails

FYI: Unless there is evidence to the contrary the two events, loss of emails and the threatening email from a miscreant, are likely unrelated.

Hi Iansnowyhelp,

Thanks for your post and welcome to the forums. It's great having you on board with us in the Community.

We're sorry to hear you've received a spam email. As mentioned above, it's unlikely the 2 are related however.

You can find information on staying safe here

In terms of the missing emails, are you currently using a client or webmail direct? If the emails cannot be seen within webmail then I'm afraid it does mean the emails are gone and we wouldn't be able to get them back.

Going forward, any emails that are important, please ensure you back these up.

Many thanks,

Hi Kath

Im pretty sure that the Hack and the missing emails ARE related as the emails disappeared and the following email appeared at the same time and the email states that the two are related

The password shown has now been changed

I use a client but have looked on webmail and only recent emails are available

Hi Ian

The picture you posted has been rejected a it contains both your email address and the password (which you say you have changed)

This is for your own safety.  Webcrawlers could pick  up your email address (and password) from the forums and spam  you

The following page, which unfortunately doesn't help with your missing emails,  shows the email you received has been around for a number of years and tries to trick you into thinking that your computer or phone is infected with malware

https://malwaretips.com/blogs/remove-i-have-to-share-bad-news-with-you/

You've done the correct thing in changing your password.

o make the threats more credible, the scammers may include one of your passwords in this email. The scammers have your password from sites that were hacked, and in this case, likely matched up to a database of emails and stolen passwords and sent this scam out to potentially millions of people. You can check if your email or password was compromised in a data breach on Haveibeenpwned.

Thanks for coming back to us Iansnowyhelp. I would be happy to take a further look into this and pass the information to our security team to run checks from our side but to do this, we would need to pass account security to be able to do so.

I will drop a private message over in a moment. Please look out for the message and we can get started.
Kind Regards,
