Ah, the Internationale Funkausstellung 2017! Say what?! We meant IFA 2017 hits Berlin this week, and it's shaping up to be a great event.

IFA is the consumer electronics and home appliances trade show held annually in Berlin, it first started in 1924. Together with MWC (Mobile World Congress) and CES (Consumer Electronics Show), IFA forms a triumvirate of dates oft-circled in most techies' diaries at the start of a new year.

What can we expect this year, you might ask?

If past IFA's can be judged by product announcements, we can look forward to new products from Sony, and possible unveilings from Lenovo/Motorola and LG. These are just a host of the 200+ brands exhibiting across the 6 day event, so you can expect a whole host of product reveals and announcements. In the past, we have been treated to launches of the Sony Xperia XZ and X Compact (and its ZD9 television) as well as Samsung's Note line-up in years gone by. However, as Samsung held their Note8 Unpacked event on 23 August, expectations now shift to their Gear range of wearables and other devices, especially when you consider the Gear S3 dropped at last year's show.

In terms of home appliances and consumer electronics, keynotes from Philips, Microsoft, Fitbit (who only recently announced their new Ionic smartwatch), Foxconn and Huawei are expected. Last year’s focus on kitchen tech and connected smart cars went down a treat, and we wait with bated breath to see whether companies will lead us further into the smart home (à la Amazon Echo and Google Home) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
