It's a great time to be a gamer - well, it's always a great time to be a gamer, but this month especially we're spoiled for choice in free games as PS Plus or Xbox Live Gold subscribers. Sony are also throwing in Horizons Zero Dawn, free to all, as part of Play At Home.

Horizon Zero Dawn (PS5)

PlayStation fans, whether you're on the new PS5, or PS4, you can grab arguably one of the better original RPG's of the last few years for absolutely nothing. Released in 2017 to near universal approval, Horizon Zero Dawn follows the story of Aloy as she explores a future post-apocalyptic version of the USA where machines roam free. The machines enjoy free reign as humanity is seemingly reduced to smaller pockets of tribes here and there. It's a great playthrough and seeing the mystery unravel piece by piece is a hugely satisfying experience as you progress.

Horizon: Zero Dawn Complete Edition is available until 4am BST on May 15

Oddworld: Soulstorm (PS5)

Sony went big this month by including the newly released Oddworld: Soulstorm for PS5 subscribers as part of the PS Plus monthly update. Abe returns for this follow-up to 2014's Oddworld: New 'N' Tasty. The game hasn't been met with the same as some of the other free games this month, but for fans of Abe's earlier adventures, it's a spiritual remake of what the team behind the game originally envisioned for 1998's Oddworld: ....

Xbox Live Gold April Games

Xbox Live Gold subscribers can currently download 3 games with Vikings: Wolves of Midgard (until April 30), Truck Racing Championship (until May 15) and Hard Corps: Uprising (until April 30). Vikings: Wolves of Midgard sets you to the Shores of Midgard where you battle hordes of undead monstrosities and the beasts of Ragnarok, set against the backdrop of Fimbulwinter. This action RPG has received mixed reviews, but it's definitely worth checking out if you subscribe.

PS Plus April Games

PS Plus subscribers on the PS4 & PS5 can enjoy the zombie survival RPG Days Gone and Zombie Army 4: Dead War this month in what is looking like a bit of an undead theme. Days Gone places you in a post-apocalyptic Oregon two years after the start of a global pandemic as you embark on a quest to find protagonist Deacon's wife, Sarah. In Zombie Army 4: Dead War you're fighting a horde of zombies among the backdrop of the 1940s Europe and World War 2. This action shooter includes a campaign mode for 1-4 players and a healthy dose of animated gore. With positive reviews across the board, it's probably one to check out if you're a fan of the zombie subculture.

Free to play on Steam

Whilst there isn't a subscription service that offers free versions of paid games, Steam has an abundance of bargain offers on popular games, as well as a whole host of free to play titles. Our picks from the current crop include Star Wars: The Old Republic, Destiny 2 and EVE Online. Most have paid options and restrictions to the levels you can reach whilst playing for free, but in each case it's a great chance to sample the game before spending any money.

Steam lists thousands of titles currently free, or free to play, check out all the options on Steam.
