There is boxing history on the line this weekend under the bright lights of Las Vegas as Canelo Alvarez takes on Caleb Plant, with the victor set to become the first ever undisputed super-middleweight champion.
Mexican Alvarez has looked in imperious form since returning to this weight in 2020, swiftly claiming the WBA, WBO and WBC titles with impressive victories over Callum Smith, Avni Yildirim and Billy Joe Saunders. His strong defence and swift counter punching ability make him one of the sport’s great competitors and with an envious record of 56 wins from 59 fights he is one of boxing’s more experienced fighters.
But against Caleb Plant, the current IBF super middleweight champion, that record will be put to a stern test. Plant has an unblemished record of 21 wins from 21 fights and has already seen off three challengers for his IBF title in the past two years. Most recently he defeated fellow American Caleb Truax by judges’ decision.
The tension has already been on display in the build up to this fight and punches were thrown during a heated press conference last month. It is the punches this weekend though that will determine the destination of the four titles.
