I have a problem with my landline and a engineer was booked , appointment now appears to have been cancelled ?? I have no other phone to call Virgin and not able to speak online

Are there currently any area faults? If so all appointments are cancelled until the faults is fixed.
Have you looked at Check service status at the top of the page? You can also a run a test on your equipment from there.
If nothing is showing and you have access to an alternative phone or mobile then you could also try the Service Status number 0800 561 0061. This often gives details of more local issues down to postcode level.
If you can't contact VM by phone then you could also text VM on 0753 305 1809 or use WhatsApp on 0730 532 7112. Please be aware that replies aren't instant from either of these services, often taking 4 to 6 hours, but the agents will reply as quickly as they possibly can.
