Dementia & Vision Impairment

Advice needed - my elderly mum loves her TV  (Virgin Tivo box) but finds it increasingly difficult to use due to dementia and almost full blindness. She has the high contrast remote which helps but is now also struggling with this. Alas she has a technophobe daughter (me) who is little use

Do Virgin have anything that can voice activate the television/TiVo
or
Is there such a thing as an app that I could use remotely to change her channels from my home and phone

Thanks in advance for any advice

Re: Dementia & Vision Impairment

Hello

I am afraid that the box she has the Tivo doesn't have any form of control remotely, the box can only be controlled locally, there is no voice control available for any VM TV boxes at this time.

If she has a VM V6 box which would also require a VM broadband account you could use the VM Control App, see https://www.virginmedia.com/help/virgin-tv-using-tv-control-as-a-remote which would allow control over the internet.

Re: Dementia & Vision Impairment

Hi Lizzy23, thanks for getting in touch.

As Mike advised above those facilities aren't available on an older box, but I'd be happy to take a look and see if upgrading is an option? Just get back to me via PM and we'll take it from there.

Re: Dementia & Vision Impairment

To quote the webpage above:

"You can only use the app as a remote control when your device is connected to the same home network as your Virgin TV V6, powered by TiVo or TiVo box. If you’re out and about you’ll see the remote icon has an exclamation mark or an orange ‘x’ over it."

It seems that you would not be able to change channel as you want.

Re: Dementia & Vision Impairment

If you cannot find a solution consider Sky Q's voice control. A switch to Sky and the installation of a satellite dish would be needed.
