First off, are you aware the TiVo allows you to record upto 3 programmes at once? That might well be easier than relying on VOD, but all the same...
The TiVo has an inbuilt internet connection and many issues with OnDemand are caused by this connection failing without users realising. On the front-left of your box there's 3 green lights, second-from-left is your "online" light which indicates your TiVo's internet connection.
Static on is good, flashing is bad and means the connection has failed. No internet means no OnDemand, and is a service fault.
If your live TV is failing, it could mean you have signal issues. Again, a fault.
