With my V6 handheld remote, how do I search for an actor's name when their name has punctuation in it? Like a middle initial with a period after it? Or a last name that starts with O' ? If I leave the period, or O', or just the apostrophe off, then the search returns no results.

Apologies for the confusion there. Any punctuation would be in line with the TiVo guide itself, which advises replacing hyphens (-), slashes (/) and full stops (.) with spaces.
After doing some research into this, it does appear that it has been a known issue on the TiVo service itself for quite some time, where even adding the additional space doesn't work - and little to no support has been provided.
At present, there are no plans to implement a fix on the TiVo service. I'm really sorry about that. The TV360 service does offer the ability to use punctuation using an on-screen keyboard, but there are some differences between both the V6/TiVo and 360 software, as mentioned above.

Now tried the same on my V6 and I agree there's no way of putting apostrophes or special characters in.
I would suggest searching for, say "O'Connor" as "O Connor" - pretty sure the search results will include it.
I tried searching for O Connor instead of O'Connor, and neither returns anything.
I also tried searching for David O Russell instead of David O. Russell, and neither returns anything, even though he is in the cast database on Virgin Media for Three Kings (1999).
Thanks for posting to us here on the Community.
Sorry to hear you are having some issues when searching for actors names.
Can you please try removing the space between the letter and last name? For example David ORussell.
If this doesn't work, please do let us know and we will get this fed back 🙂
