On the friday just gone (18/02), our V6 box has come up with the "green screen" of death, where it comes up with a message reading your V6 box has Encountered a serious error and will try to repair. it's now been over 24 hours and we can't use our virgin TV services.

That green "DVR has detected an error" screen means your V6's hard drive has failed, you will need a replacement box.
The quickest way to report this, is to call in - 150 from a VM phone or 0345 4541111 from any other phone.
Or you can wait here for VM staff to respond, it may take a couple of days.

I tried ringing them today, but they said that the phones were closed (even though they say they're open until 8pm)
