I agree, but unfortunately that's bound to go with the territory. If you output an SD 576i picture (if you want the TV to do the SD > 4K upscaling) then you can't expect the overlaid menus from the same source to look like HD. It's either/or I'm afraid.

...just had a look at some previous posts and this was also confirmed here:

Re: Video Output Settings

This thread actually explains alot :

https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Virgin-TV-V6/Version-20-9-1-rc2-roll-out-time/td-p/4017512/page...

...well worth a read (only 4 pages!!) instead of trawling through this current thread's 50+ pages....!!!

😉

You have a 4K TV and watch just TV channels (no V6 apps), right? Then you will get the following resolutions from the V6:

  • 576i
  • 720p50
  • 1080i50
  • 2160p50

If you want your TV to do upscaling/conversion the following settings will enable this by passing the content through:

  • 576i
  • 720p
  • 1080i
  • 2160p

It would always be a good idea to add 1080p (for 1080p at 50pfs) as well as 1080p pass-through and 2160p pass-through in case you watch some app which streams those resolutions at 23.976, 24, 25, or 30fps. For clarification, anything else such as 480p, 720p25, 1080p60 and 2160p60 will get converted by the V6 to 2160p50.

Thanks for the above.

I may actually just revert back to my previous settings which give the following behaviour:

{START QUOTE - from this thread : https://community.virginmedia.com/t5/Virgin-TV-V6/Version-20-9-1-rc2-roll-out-time/td-p/4017512/page... ]

Ok, so.....

I have deselected 576i and 720p so I just have 2160p and 1080i (also have the passthroughs).

When viewing Ch999 Ultra HD - the TV reports 3840x2160/50p.

When viewing BBC ONE HD - the TV reports 1920x1080/50i.

When viewing BBC ONE SD - the TV reports 1920x1080/50i (SD channel looks quite decent actually!)

When viewing the VM Home Menu - the TV reports 1920x1080i.

VM Menus are still sharp but as not as sharp if I were to have 720p selected

There is ONLY a black screen 1 second delay when switching from HD to an UHD channel (Ch999) and back again. No delays at all when switching from SD to HD and back again.

[END QUOTE]

These seem to give the best options as I hardly watch any SD content......

Re: Video Output Settings

Your SD is being double-upscaled, first to 1080i by the V6 and then to 2160p by the TV. However it's hardly an issue for you and over the years we should hopefully get SD replaced by HD.

Re: Video Output Settings

Hello everyone

First I would like to thank everyone for contributing to the thread which I had read most of since getting a new 4k tv a few weeks ago and after finally having all settings to my liking through various calibrations of different content I decided to again revisit the vm v6 options which brought me back to the thread

While I'm not an expert or part of the vm team

I'm quite savvy about regarding computers, consoles, tv's aswel as determined on getting the best quality picture I can possibly get and after first reading this thread and some others I had my v6 video output set at 2160p & 2160p pass through for the last few weeks but now I wanted to get the best sd quality after seeing it wasn't really too clear

Earlier I seen I was able to have all ticks selected now which hadnt been advised previously which helped then read to have everything only above 1080i checked

BBC 1 sd showed as 1080I but I remembered about 720p being clearer than 1080i so what I did as a test was to have everything ticked except 576i which showed bbc 1 in 576p instead of 576i and if someone could confirm but appears the sd content does actually seem a little bit clearer

Thanks again and sorry if it's a long post

I just signed up to share these findings in the hope it may help anyone else so just to say again

I have everything checked except 576i so I'm not sure if the v6 is upscaling to 1080i which didn't look as good as when I only had everything above 720p checked to test the 1080i upscaling for the sd broadcasts but tv says it is 576p

Cheers

Re: Video Output Settings

Your TV remote has an i button (or similar), play SD, HD and UHD channels and see what resolution is displayed.

Re: Video Output Settings

Yes sorry if the last part had been a little misleading

It is showing the signal is at 576p which I thought may give a slight benefit for increasing quality for 576i content and i only mentioned my uncertainty regarding the 1080i because I had previously seen a comment that nothing is broadcast natively at 576p and 720p was only for the guide but having it set for 2160p and 2160p pass through all the way down to 576p it shows sd channels displaying at 576p, hd movies at 1080i and uhd channels 2160p so now I just unticked the the 1080i the hdr movies are showing as 1080p again

Thanks for replying

I'm really just hoping to get the best combination for the best quality picture

Would it be best to just have

2160p & 2160p passthrough

1080p passthrough only

I did a test including 1080p on skysports while it was paused and the quality difference was extremely poor compared to pass through only

Which is why I have tried to do this with the lower numbers eg 576p instead of 576i

Re: Video Output Settings

Try these which will allow SD, HD and UHD to be passed through to your TV (as well as a bunch of other stuff you may get from streaming services such as YouTube and Netflix).

  • 576i
  • 1080i
  • 1080p pass-through
  • 2160p pass-through
  • 2160p

Re: Video Output Settings

Hi sorry for delay in response I tried to give more information an I posted to a new thread so I tried to copy text and reply here and it warned about post flooding wait 3600 seconds so I will get a drink before pasting the information to you ASAP

It was a finding about hd channel quality I found had the absolute best picture but I'm focusing on the sd broadcasts right now
