Any TV box that is either stuck in the boot cycle or won't complete, has a fault - and you're best off reporting that. Your description of the sound does also sound like your hard drive has died.
It can't be repaired and will mean a replacement box, most likely by a tech visit. 150 from a VM phone, or 0345 4541111 from any other phone - or wait here a couple of days for staff to pickup.
You can access the channels in your TV package using the VM TV Go app on any compatible TV in the meantime, I've no idea what channel football's FA Cup is on these days.. but if it's on a FTA channel, then it's certainly time to check whether your TV has an inbuilt Freeview tuner.
