My V6 is telling me that it has a serious error via the green screen. It tries to restart but returns to the green screen every time. The helpline left me on hold for an hour then cut me off. I think I will need a new box asap please.

If this is the green screen with error "DVR has detected a serious error", then you are (unfortunately) correct that the hard drive has failed and the box will need replacing.
As much as I sympathise with your C/S experience, persisting with those faults queues are the best way to proceed.
