For the last week the Box takes ages to respond to any input. Also all recording are glitchy throughout even though the original programs were not. I have run tests on the virgin site and all says is OK. Also tried power cable out for 10 mins and restarting box etc. But still the same.

The recording issue is the easiest so just take that one..
Can you watch live TV ok? If so, try pausing it for perhaps 30 seconds and watch delayed.
That uses the hard drive in the same way and is effectively a recording.
If this breaks up in the same way, it would suggest problems with the hard drive - which will merit the box being replaced.

Have you managed to follow the advise from japitts? If so how did it go?
