So it's VM's SuperHub 3 that's the issue with OpenVPN; but how?

I can't get my head around it. I have tried using my SH3 in router mode, turned off the firewall and fired up a openvpn connection, the speed was really poor. I pay for 200mbps; if I don't use the VPN, I can max out my connection/speedtest.

Anyway, I tried with a wireguard vpn connection, that was nice and fast. every time I try openvpn, it's speed is really bad. now I have put my SH3 into modem mode with an old WNDR3800 and openvpn is nice and fast. more or less getting the full 200mbps.

How on earth are VM throttling openvpn connections with their SH3? I'm so confused.
