Is I possible to get a better 2nd box?
It may be old, but is it working correctly? If there isn’t a fault VM won’t replace it.

If you have broadband with Virgin and are out of contract you may be able to negotiate a new deal and ask if it's possible for a free box upgrade as part of the new 18 month contract.
The newer boxes only operate on Virgin Media broadband - they don't have the internal modem like the older TIVO.
