I am watching Filthy House SOS and some of the episodes need a pin!!!  I agree with you about Sky Max you can watch the same programmes on other channels and no pin is required. Very very annoying

I don't see that entering a PIN is a huge inconvenience, however it's a legal requirement whether customers like it or not.

You might want to read up on the Ofcom regulations at https://www.ofcom.org.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0025/125359/statement-mandatory-daytime-protection-r... 

VM are following regulatory requirements here, and the same subject crops up on the Sky forums quite often too.
