Would it be safe to assume that you've called Virgin to report these issues with your TV service?
Irrespective of the answer, can you watch live TV ok? If you can, this would tend to indicate the problem is with the hard disk. If it's also affected, it could be indicative of issues with your incoming TV signal.
It's also worth making sure you've at least rebooted your box once to eliminate a software issue.
