V6 boxes are actively sought back by VM when TV services on a given account are disconnected, and the box is certainly deactivated.
That you've not returned it, means something has gone wrong. Following the wrong process to reconnect it (i.e. expecting it to just plug in and work) is very much a case of "two wrongs don't make a right"
As regards where the V6 gets its signals from.. TV signal comes along the coax cable, the internet connection is used for OnDemand, streaming & EPG updates. Virgin Media is a cable service, your TV aerial is used for Freeview services which have nothing to do with VM.
