1080p pass through on bbc 1 hd

Hi everyone, now the video output issue has been fixed ie hybrid mode works and i can let tv do scaling instead of v6 box, I was hoping I would get 1080p instead of 1080i on BBC hd channels (at least on some programs) but seems like not, anyone have any idea why not?

On freeview via aerial, some bbc programs report 1080p on my tv but if I switch to virgin it only has it in 1080i with a noticeable drop in quality

I have my output settings as 2160p, 1080p, 1080i and both pass through options selected which I think in theory should make it work

Cheers

Re: 1080p pass through on bbc 1 hd

HD TV broadcasts are at 1080i, so by enabling this resolution it's your TV which upscales 1080i to 2160p. As an experiment, remove 1080i and 1080p so that the V6 does the upscaling instead.

I find best results are 2160p, 2160p passthru and 1080p.

Re: 1080p pass through on bbc 1 hd

Thanks for the responses. To your point around broadcast/freeview being 1080i don't get why my tv says 1080p on some programs e.g. right now, Jamie Oliver program on channel 4 hd has it as 1080p whereas news on bbc1 hd says 1080i. Last night our girl on bbc1 hd was showing 1080p. Hence freeview channels via aerial seem to change between 1080i and 1080p depending on content (i'm not changing any setting on tv) whereas v6 is always on 1080i

Re: 1080p pass through on bbc 1 hd

And I my ultimate goal is to have tv do any upscaling rather than the v6 box as my expectation is my lg oled is going to be better at it than the v6 (although I could be wrong on this!)

If you have 2160p and 1080i both ticked - the V6 will output at 1080i expect for UHD when it will switch to 2160p.

I find the V6 is not that good at upscaling on my tv.

The Coders used for the BBC B (HD) Mux on Freeview analyse the throughput frame by frame & decide whether it should code as interlaced or progressive. This is part of the MPEG4 AVC toolkit that uses the most efficient bit rate for transmission against quality, so the signal can constantly switch between the two formats.

VM receives all HD channels uncompressed & converts them all to 1080i/25 at the master headend for distribution to the rest of the headend chain.

Re: 1080p pass through on bbc 1 hd

Thanks that explains it then. Seems a shame that virgin do that as the quality of freeview when it is 1080p a lot better than the virgin 1080i, however not an expert on  this at all and sure it's not trivial to implement

Since the options on the V6 indicate the capability of the attached display device, do you not select every option? Then when the V6 comes across a signal in any format it just sends it directly to the display.

I have a question about passthrough. Do the passthrough options relate to frame rates rather than resolution?

e.g. for me (with a lowly 1080p set) what is the difference between selecting 1080 passthrough and 1080 passthrough + 1080p?

(or indeed 1080 passthrough + 1080i)

Re: 1080p pass through on bbc 1 hd

Hi Eeeps,

Pass through is for when you don't plug your hdmi lead directly in to your television set but instead it goes to an amp sound bar or home cinema system to pass through to the TV if you plug in directly don't select pass through.

Hope this helps
