What is CEC and how do I enable it

Roseyhue

I think I am getting there with my new 360 download to my V6 box set up.  I have One Power on and I have paired my Onkyo AV unit using the auto method as well as the hand method.  I can now switch my TV and the Virgin box on and off using the 360 remote and my volume adjusts using the 360 remote via the AV unit.

What does not happen is being able to switch my AV unit on and off via the 360 remote.

I think that I have the fancy HDMI cables connecting everything together.

I have read on the Virgin Media help site that on/off via One Power only works for compatible equipment but the Onkyo is compatible enough to allow the 360 remote to control the volume.

I saw a refence in another post to enabling CEC.  I can't find anywhere in the settings menus that mentions CEC.  No idea if it would fix this if I found it!!

Basically, do I stop trying and keep the Onkyo remote handy for switching on and off, or is there one more step to success????

CEC ls 'One Power' in the 360 menu.

It all works fine here with my Yamaha amp but then my tv switches the amp off when the tv goes off.

Hello Rosehue,

Hope you are okay.

Can I just ask if you have managed to resolve this issue now?

Hi Gareth,

No, its not fixed yet.  In fact, we seem to have found a problem when switching on as well.

The 360 box connects into an Onkyo TX-SR608 AV receiver and this in turn is connected into a Samsung 5 series TV.  All cables are HDMI.  We keep the TV volume turned right down and use our 5.1 speakers connected to the AV unit for sound.

I used the 360 settings menu to pair the remote with the TV and the AV unit,  The 360 remote now controls the volume we hear via the AV unit.  To switch the setup off we press the red button at the top right of the 360 remote.  The TV goes into standby and the 360 box goes into standby and the AV unit stays on, so currently we switch the AV unit off with the AV remote.  We then turn the power off to the whole set up.  We don't use the TV remote at all.

To switch it all back on again we switch the mains power on, followed by switching the AV unit on using the AV remote.  We then press the red button on the top right of the 360 remote and the 360 box plus the TV both switch on.  We can see the "welcome" part of the boot up process of the 360 box on the TV screen.  Then we see the message "Onkyo HDMI1 no signal" and then the whole TV screen goes blue and stays that way.  If we press the red button again and put the 360 box and TV into standby, leaving the AV unit on, then press the red button again to bring the TV and the 360 box back on......it all works fine!

A previous answer to my question raised an issue that the AV unit might get its "off" signal via the TV?  I have never programmed the TV remote to turn on/off the AV unit.  Looking at the TV user manual I see that there is a "universal remote" function in the "Source" screen.

Any ideas how we can get it all working off the 360 remote by just pressing the red button once for on and once for standby of all three units?

Hi @Roseyhue,

Thank you for expanding on this for us. I'm sorry to hear that the matter isn't quite resolved yet.

To clarify, are you saying that the 360 remote is now paired to control both the 360 box and your TV, but that it hasn't paired to also help control the speakers which are connected to your AV unit? Have you checked the user manual and/or contacted the manufacturer of said AV unit/speaker to see if they can offer any support on it?

Thanks,

...I would first try all of the above turn on/off procedures without turning off all your equipment at the plug when you power off.

AVs, TV's and set top boxes aren't designed to be turned off at the plug after each and every use so its no wonder you're seeing issues (I doubt you're even saving £s by turning everything off anyway!).

What a palaver just so that you can attempt to use one remote! What I hate about HDMI-CEC is the loss of control or odd results you can get. I've got my remotes lined up next to each other for my TV box, AV receiver and TV, and it takes three quick presses to put all devices into standby. I take my TV, AVR and TV box out of standby in that order so that there is never a problem with the exchange of EDID data and the TV invariably works first time.

Just to answer a couple of points raised in this thread and to probably call it to an end as I think that it is just going to be "one of those things.

I haven't contacted Onkyo about the AV unit.  I reckon it either works or it doesn't work.

We switch off all the units, as we have done for years because my other half prefers it that way.  I'm too lazy and would leave it in standby!!  Leaving it powered up makes no difference though.  I have tried it.

The remote has paired with the AV unit as far as controlling the volume but not as far as powering the AV unit on or off.

We used three remotes when we had the V6 previous software.  The option to use just one remote seemed useful, and sometimes the solution to some of these problems is to find the right menu to make adjustments, so I tried asking the forum.  As it is, we have managed to reduce the array of remotes by one.  So thats a partial success!!

Time to move on I guess.  Thanks for all the ideas.

Just try leaving the 360 box in standby, don't turn off at the plug, as that is the slowest item to start up as it's rebooting and needs to do any updates. Nothing to lose by trying.

Edited to say make sure the 360 is set to fast start or active start.
