You will lose all recordings as the hard drive is reformatted and Horizon software loaded to replace the TiVo software.

Unless you are changing any part of your package then a free box upgrade shouldn't affect any current pricing or contract length.

It should say in the email, if it doesn't I would say no, your current contract will stay the same.

Thanks for that, I had a feeling recordings would be lost. Is it not possible there could be a backup facility for saved recordings when there are upgrades to the system?

Unfortunately there is no backup feature available for switching between Horizon and TiVo software, you just need to watch any recordings you haven't seen before you do the upgrade and hope that any favourite recordings you have kept to watch again are shown again so they can be rerecorded. 🙁
