My Virgin360 TiVo box needs replacing.

SPANKiE
On our wavelength

Whenever it get's to 80% full, recordings start failing.

If I allow it to become completely full, it totally freezes up.

After a reboot, it deletes all of my saved and scheduled recordings.

This started happening immediately after the Virgin360 update.

I tried to get it resolved months ago over the phone, but got some nonsense about there being a fault in my area.

Hope somebody can help.

Thanks

By means of advice on terminology. there's no such thing as a "360 TiVo". Fundamentally, TV360 is not TiVo or V6, but it sounds like you have a TV360 which was formerly a V6.

Is this problem replicable - i.e. it doesn't happen when your HDD is <80% or so, but reliably does once it goes above that?

You're right to think this has nothing to do with any area issue, VM staff often pick up threads on here but others can check a few bits first. Have you tried a factory reset with the option to keep your recordings?

I suspect this behaviour is because the Horizon software on TV 360 has no storage management, unlike TiVo which will start to delete recordings automatically to allow new recordings to take place.

Should this be the reason, I suggest the only action is to manage the storage yourself.

I fail to understand why you record so much that you fill the box. In my opinion, you would NEVER find time to watch a full box.

Mine rarely gets above 5% full.

Perhaps it’s time to consider keeping your box at a manageable level, say 50% full at the very most.

These boxes are for watching at convenience, not for archiving programs you’ll never watch.

Thanks, I knew I wasn't using the correct terms but I couldn't recall exactly what it was being called these days, and my head is so full of new 3D printer stuff it's about to burst, so thought if I just threw everything at the wall, somebody would be able to work out what I was talking about 🙂

You are correct, it is a TV360 formerly known as a V6

It is consistantly reproducable regarding being fine when under 80% full. Lots of fun battling the "health bar".

Though it's only at 6% now, so reproducing it again may take a while.

It's only reached 100% full once, and went totally **bleep** up. That was the last straw for me, so here I am.

I have factory reset, but I did not choose to keep the recordings.

Thanks for your input.

Hi @SPANKiE

Sorry to fill your head with more junk, but the following may explain some of the deleted/failed recordings and help you fine tune the 360.

You can fine tune recordings and recording space by going to Saved > Recorded > See All >

There is a percentage indicator in the top left hand corner so you can see how much HDD space has been used.

Clicking on the top row and selecting Manage Storage >  Enter your pin number > brings up a new screen where you can set your default options for deleting recordings

Ask to delete after watching can be turned On or Off

Auto-delete when space needed can be switched to Off or On. This function will automatically delete the oldest content when disk space is required for a new recording.  By default, it’ll be off for existing users but for new installs it’ll be on. (This may be why when the 360 gets to around 80% full some recordings fail, possibly depending on the length of the program, and older recordings are deleted)

You can also further fine tune recordings Fast Clean-up options

If you have more than one main box select the box you wish to perform these actions on

From there you can :- Delete all fully watched programs.

Delete all recordings older than 6 months.

Delete all recordings.

Stop all future recordings.

Delete and stop all recordings.

You can also protect shows and ensure they aren’t auto deleted when auto delete is turned on:

Saved > Recorded >  See All   Highlight (select) the program  by name and click on the  edit “pencil” icon on the right side of the bin (delete) icon, then either turn on or off Protect from auto-delete for that program.

If space is required for a new recording, unprotected recordings will be deleted using this logic: Watched, oldest to newest recording. Unwatched, oldest to newest. Content that is being watched at the time will not be deleted. And if all content is protected, the recording will fail indicating this as a reason

Ernie_C The capacity of the hard disk is there to be utilised. In full. As advertised (OS uasage and the 1000, 1024 situation not withstanding).

Failed recordings and lockups are not the expected nor intended behavior of this device, regardless of the amount remaining storage.

I appreciate you taking the time to respond, but your failer to understand how or why someone would have a different usage patern than yourself is indeed, I'm afraid to say, quite the short sighted failer on your part.

I should not have to micro manage storage space in this fasion, for fear of corrupt recordings or worse.

If I wish to store some content long term, that is entirley my business. I find this to be a totally reasonable and (I presume) very common useage case senario.

I will not be considering keeping my box at 50% full. (perhaps 75% for now, due to it being faulty)

I fundimentally disagree with your opinion on what "these boxes are for".

I do not apreciate your condisending and presumtious tone, regarding what I will and will not watch.

There is clearly a fault with my device, whether that be software or hardware based. Your attempt to lay the blame for this at the user is rediculious and insulting.

It is correct to say that VM TV boxes are intended for timeshift viewing, and not long-term archiving, T&C's do cover this.

The vast majority of the time, it's not a problem. But sometimes technical changes to VM's TV service can render recordings inaccessible after a period of time.

I apologise @SPANKiE  but, of course, I am allowed an opinion and it can be different from yours.

As to me being condescending and presumptuous (correct spellings), I beg to disagree also.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the detailed info, but I just want it to not break with general usage.

A recording that would add just another 1% to the 80% should not fail.

The drive becoming 100% full should not cause it freeze and then delete all recordings and planned recordings.

There is clearly a fault with my device (does this happen to others?) that needs to be addressed.

Or are you telling me that this is "normal" behaviour now?

Thanks again.

Hi Japitas,

I do not intend to "archive" content, but there should be no problem with it just sitting there.

New recordings are failing when the drive is only 80% full.

Recordings being rendered inaccessible after a period of time is unrelated to my issue.

Thanks
