Can't record and upgrade old v6 box

I didn't know I had to upgrade my old V6 box before I disconnected it. Virgin activated my 360 box before I had connected it so change the boxes over. Tried swapping back but would not work, also I haven't got an ethernet cable through to my bedroom so can't get it to work in there. Also my 360 box won't record it says We can't find your hard drive and the code CS6031. I'm not very good with tech and don't know what to do. Thanks in advance
