Is there any way I can stop my 360 box going into standby?

I’ve already put it on 24hrs but this is useless if I am away and want to record from the app - any request sent from the app is only actioned once the box is turned on so I might as well not bother with the app and do it on the box directly!

Just set the TV 360 to Fast start in its system settings and you can do anything you want from the Virgin TV Go app when away from home, except watch recordings.
