"can't send message with SM1 - error 96"

I have been having issues with my new SIM [ I don't know why virgin insisted I change the SIM card, there was nothing wrong with the old one and nobody I know has been asked to change theirs ] First of all I could not get internet, this is not a problem I often go all month without using it so it is not missed. But now I cannot get text and that is something I use. I get "can't send message with SM1 - error 96" I believe I may have deleted something on my phone when I changed over SIM's.

Has anybody got any ideas how to solve this?

Hi Quarternote,

have a look here for your phone model and check/enter the settings provided. Hopefully that will fix your issue.

Re: "can't send message with SM1 - error 96"

Thank you for the quick reply,

I followed the link you provided but unfortunately my phone is not listed there. I have a Motorola Moto e5 play [ XT 1920-15 ]  I did phone the help line last week and they said they would reset something, this did nothing. If I set my phone back to factory settings would that help ?

Re: "can't send message with SM1 - error 96"

OK its been a few months since I had this problem but now its appeared again. But now my device is not listed and I do not know how to get the reset code that fixed it before.

Does anyone no how I can get the fix for this problem now that my device is not listed? I put in the iemi code but it said not found.

Re: "can't send message with SM1 - error 96"

Hi again John,

The IEMI is a PITA to enter and is always 15 numercial digits long.  Did you dial *#06#  rather than try and read the printed numbers ?

I'm not sure if any of the settings have become corrupted but maybe make sure you have the correct APN settings for and data and mms - taken from the excellent sticky post by teabag APN-settings

It's basically the same info listed for all mobiles phones that would be sent to your phone, even though your mobile is no longer shown in the lists.

Internet & MMS APN.
Name: WEB
APN: goto.virginmobile.uk
MMSC: http://mms.virginmobile.co.uk:8002
MMS proxy: 193.30.166.2
MMS port: 8080
MCC: 234
MNC: 38
Authentication type: CHAP
APN type: *
APN Protocol: IPv4
APN Roaming Protocol: IPv4
Leave all other options blank/Not set

Re: "can't send message with SM1 - error 96"

Hi again John,

each android manufacturer has the settings set up slightly differently, but for an old Motorala I had (from memory)

Tap Settings > More > Mobile Networks> Access point names> APN profile

I'm sorry if it's not that exact sequence, but one you find Mobile Networks you should find the rest

Good luck

Dave
