Have switched off and on many times
removed sim card and put back in
sim card status
network Virgin, signal strength -85 dBm 14 asu, mobile network type HSPA, service state In Service, Roaming Not roaming (under mobile networks in settings Data roaming switch is on), Mobile network state Disconnected

Does this happen in one particular area or everywhere that you go?
Is this just affecting calls/texts? How is your Mobile data connection?
Can you try toggling between 2G/3G to see if that helps?
Are you able to test the SIM in another handset to see if the issue persists?
