My phone has just switched to this

vo lte I have no idea why, there was no update or anything it just appeared, will this take my data or charge me.

What phone do you have?

Might be that you have now switched over to Vodafones network and you now benefit from better quality calls as they are using 4G instead of 3G

If I make a normal phone call to another mobile while out and about will volte use my data.

No, it still uses normal minutes, it just means the call will be HD quality, if the person at the other end also has VoLTE

 No. In the future the majority of calls will be VoLTE. It is essential for calls on 5G and allows for calls to drop back to 4G when moving out of a 5G area. Also 3G will eventually be turned off.
