Voicemail. Not being notified of new messages.

Hi,

I am using a Google Pixel 6a with a Virgin Mobile eSIM which I have had since just before Christmas.

Voicemail seems to be working but once a message is left it is pot luck whether I am notified of it or not. There is no voicemail icon but I receive a text message now and then saying there are new message(s). 

There is no pattern to whether it is working or not. I have toggled the option in the voicemail menu for message alerts (option 3 then option 2) but it makes no difference.

Any ideas please?
