Sim Not Valid

New SIM arrived today (21 Aug 2020) but when I followed the instructions, all I got was "SIM NOT VALID". It does not ask for an unlock code. The phone is a Nokia 100 (pay as you go), purchased from Argos in 2013. I thought I might have trouble with it when the Virgin website would not recognise the IMEI. I need this phone to work in order to receive phone and text messages for ongoing medical appointments. Thanks
