SIM network unlock & Not registered on network

I was sent a new SIM by virgin at the beginning of June and this was installed and was working fine. My phone switched off today with lack of charge and when I powered it up I see a message "SIM network unlock PIN". I've entered what I thought was the default 7890 but nothing happens. If I dismiss the message then I can't connect to a network and get the message that I'm not registered on a network. I've tried to reset the default APN setting but to no avail. I'm using a Samsung mini S3.

Where did the phone come from originally? For some reason it now thinks the SIM is from a different network to the one the phone allows.

The new Virgin Media SIMs are seen as different network than the older ones due to technical changes - so it can cause some phones to require an unlock but I've never seen this happen after a phone has worked with a SIM - it should always come up immediately the SIM is changed.

Confusing as SIM network unlock usually means the phone is network locked, but as you say the phone worked fine before.

Have you tried all the old favourites, like switching to aeroplane mode and back, or removing the SIM and starting again.

So, I input the form as suggested, to get a mobile unlock code on Monday but I am still waiting a response from Virgin after the recommended 72 hour time allowance.  Should I complete another form? Does anyone from Virgin read these messages as I'm getting very frustrated at not having my phone in use.
